September 23rd 2014 Lucca, Italy
We are now staying in the walled city of Lucca and as I said last night basing out of here for the next five nights. Lucca is probably one of the most beautiful Tuscan towns you will find and is a town completely surrounded by a still intact defence wall.
Lucca was founded by the Etruscans and became a Roman colony in 180 BC. The rectangular grid of the historical centre preserves the Roman street plan, and the Piazza San Michele occupies the site of the ancient forum. At the Lucca conference in 56BC, Julius Caesar, Pompey, and Crassus reaffirmed their political alliance know as the First Triumvirate.
We spent the better part of the day exploring and photographing the interesting streetscapes of the village. Enjoy tonights selection of images.
Our hotel in Lucca,
Street Cafe's is the best place to watch the world go by
Every where you turn in Lucca is a photograph
Because automobiles are restricted inside the walled city, bicycles are a major part of transportation
Many unique photo opportunities
Interesting to have come across a shop this image from the final Stanley Cup game in Vancouver
Gail checking to see if the lemons were real!
Every street is unique and decorated
Another colourful street cafe called La Luna
This bike was in one of the alley ways we walked through.
A panorama of the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro
Reflections into the piazza
As I said every corner offers up a great photo opportunity, this old cart adds to the image
Karen, Janet and Diane just outside the city gates
This young lady was sitting in the middle of the square painting.
