Exploring Dawson City August 26, 2016
The early morning fog burned off as we enjoyed our breakfast leaving a sunny day to explore Dawson City. In the morning, some Trekkers took to the nearby trails while others photographed the historic downtown area and visited the Dawson City Museum. Among its other displays, the Dawson City Museum is home to four restored locomotives that were used by the Klondike Mines Railway (KMR) from 1905-1913. The KMR was a narrow gauge train line that was used to carry passengers and freight to and from the gold fields near Dawson.
After lunch we boarded the paddle wheeler, Klondike Spirit, for a two-hour cruise on the Yukon River. The paddle wheeler heads about five kilometers downstream to Moosehide village, a traditional Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in First Nation village site accessible only by boat. On our way back we cruised past the paddle wheeler graveyard where seven paddle wheelers were dry-docked in the early 1950’s as they became obsolete.
Tonight we took in the follies show at Diamond Tooth Gerties, a not for profit gambling hall that directs all its profits back into the community.
We ended the day with a late night trip up to Midnight Dome where we photographed the post sunset glow and star trails, but no Aurora Borealis.

The Klondike Spirit has a flat bottom and no keel in order to maneuver the shallow sandbank areas of the river. Two paddle wheels provide propulsion.
