September 3, 2016 - Alaska Trek on the White Pass & Yukon Railway
This morning we boarded our motor coach at the White Pass Depot in Whitehorse for a trip along the scenic South Klondike Highway to Fraser, BC, where we connected with the world famous narrow gauge White Pass & Yukon Route Railway (WP&YR).
Built in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush, this narrow gauge railroad is an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, a designation shared with the Panama Canal, the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty.
From Fraser, we descended almost 900 metres (3000 feet) in the 45 KM (28 miles) between Fraser and Skagway.
In Skagway, we had about two hours to photograph this unique and historic town. Skagway was the starting point for thousands of men heading to Dawson City during the Klondike Gold Rush. It's home to many gold-rush-era buildings, now preserved as part of the Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park.
Enjoy our last day in the Yukon photos including a couple of Northern Lights shots captured late last night.
Here comes the train
Each car was heated with a small stove
The first few miles out of Fraser, the land is quite flat
Mountain tops just south of Fraser, BC
There are many twists and turns as we start our descent
Part of the old White Pass trail is visible here. Today it is used by hikers.
The original steel cantilever bridge was in service up until 1969.
Albert and Betty Ann stretching for that perfect shot; don’t lean too far out.
Ice Fields visible from the train.
The train makes two stops to pick up or drop off hikers.
The view from inside.
Skagway river approaching the town of Skagway.
A caboose that is now rented out as overnight accommodation for hikers.
An abandoned rail car in Skagway.
Abandoned railroad equipment.
Downtown Skagway
Lots of interesting shops up the side streets too.
More of the colourful shops.
Arctic Brotherhood Hall a fraternal hall built in 1899. Over 8,800 pieces of driftwood make up the front façade.
Now that’s a snow blower!
It was a good day to visit Skagway as there was only one cruise ship in port.
Here are a few images from our guests…

After the return bus trip to Whitehorse, we enjoyed our farewell dinner as the clouds finally disappeared at sunset. Some of the group made one last attempt to capture the Aurora and with success our trip is complete. Tomorrow afternoon we begin our journey home. Thanks for checking-in each day and following our Yukon Blog, it's been an amazing trip. And of course a special thanks to all the Photo Trekkers that joined us on our journey.
The Trekkers in Whitehorse wish you a good night.
