Monday July 24th, 2017 - Cheri Gompa monastery hike.
Another beautiful morning in Bhutan. This morning we drove towards the northern end of the valley for a nature walk and photography ending up at Cheri Gompa monastery. We hiked along the river then crossing the cantilevered bridge and on to Cheri Dorji Dhen built in 1620 by the first ruler of Bhutan, who established the first order of monks here. This took us approximately 1 hour to reach the top. The views and photography were amazing. This monastery is home to 50 monks who can spend up to three years here. The above image is a meditation room, located even higher up the cliff of the mountain.
Tomorrow we will leave Thimphu and travel to Panache which is approximately 3 hours away. En-route we will stop at Dochu La Pass, 10,000 feet 3,048 meters to view and photograph the eastern Himalayas, including Bhutan’s highest mountain, Gangkar Punsum with an elevation of 24,770 feet or 7,550 meters. The road then drops through a beautiful forest finally emerging into the highly cultivated Panakha valley.
