Kenya & Tanzania Travel Day & Nairobi Elephant & Giraffe Reserve
What an exciting 48 hours since we departed from Canada on Tuesday. Our direct flight from Toronto to Africa saw us arriving in Nairobi at 10:30 a.m. to a champagne welcome. Then a transferred to our hotel and had some downtime before meeting in the afternoon for dinner and our first briefing for our trek. Thursday morning we visited the David Sheldrek elephant orphanage and reserve. This was an amazing experience where we had some up-close opportunities with elephants that have been rescued from the wild due to injury, a parent being killed, being shot at, snare traps and evening falling down wells. The are kept at the reserve until they are between 3 and 4 years old and re-introduced into the wild. We had lunch at Tamambo Karen Blixen coffee garden, explored the Karen Blixen (writer of Out of Africa) and then wrapped up our first day at the Rothchild Giraffe reserve.
This evening we visited the home of the Manji family for our welcome dinner. Minaz Manji and his wife, son and daughter owns the tour company we work with in Kenya and Tanzania. Great meal, and fun evening.
Tomorrow we meet up with our jeeps and depart for the next 12 days on safari exploring and photographing the national game reserves in Kenya and Tanzania.
