Tuesday May 16th, 2017 - Giethoorn "Holland's little Venice"
A fun day of photography on the water today. Early this morning we traveled to the picturesque village of Giethoorn. We had rented whisper boats that took our photographers up and down the beautiful residential canals of Giethoorn. We spent the entire morning experiencing and photographing this beautiful village. Every house is set on the canal, reflections and colours were amazing. Thanks to Mike White who helped me with transportation today.
We then traveled further up to the coast to Hindeloopen, an old city in the North of the Netherlands on the IJsselmeer. It lies within the municipality of Nijefurd. It is famous because of the Hindeloopen art and Hindeloopen costume. Then on to the enclosing dam dike, "The Afsluitdijk." In 1932 the North Sea coastline of The Netherlands was sealed off by a 30-km (19-mile) dike, connecting the province of Noord-Holland with Friesland. The Afsluitdijk stands 100 meters (328 feet) wide and sits seven meters (23 feet) above sea level, and this outstanding feat of hydraulic engineering closed the mouth of the saltwater Zuiderzee (Southern Sea), shortening the coastline and giving Amsterdam and other low-lying towns protection from repeated flooding by the sea. A great day wrapped up with a pizza party back at our hotel. Enjoy todays selection of photographs.
The first image is a map showing the places we have visited since our arrival in the Netherlands 5 days ago. The number is day we visited and red circle is the locations.
