Scotland Blog - Wednesday June 4th, 2014 - Barra to Oban
We had an early start this morning as our ferry departed Barra at 7:30 a.m. for our sail back to the mainland. Our total travel time on the ferry today was just over 7 hours. That might seem like a long journey but the weather was beautiful which made for a great day to sit outside and photograph the many sights as they passed.
This afternoon we arrived in Oban and prior to checking into our hotel visited the Oban distillery. It was a great tour including a taste of 14 year special keg and then an additional taste of their latest 14 year old single malt at the end of the tour. Then on to check into our hotel. For the next two nights we will be staying at the Oban Bay Hotel.
Tomorrow we will be boarding another ferry and sailing to the Isle of Mull, which is part of the Inner Hebrides. We will be spending most of the day photographing on the island.
Tonights images are a combination of more photos from Barra and our todays travels. Enjoy the photos and tonight from Oban.
This maps shows you our Scotland journey so far.
Lady of the Isle monument done in HDR black and white.
A view from the hill top of Eriskay ferry port around 1 p.m. yesterday.
Ken taking a few minutes to walk along the beautiful white beaches of the Isle.
Jacqui taking a few shots.
HDR black & white ... Sheep on a hill.
Rest time.
Baby lamb keeping a close eye.
Bill capturing a few images on the beach.
This dog was at the Barra airport today.
This is Barra airport ... and the interesting thing about visiting this airport is that the flights can only land during low tide because the runway is the beach.
We timed our visit to catch a flight landing and taking off 20 minutes later. You can see the spray from the wet shell based beach as the flight lands.
Passengers arriving walk across the beach to the airport.
Take off about 20 minutes later. Two flights a day arrive and take off, there are usually more folk watching the flights arrive than in the airport for travel.
An interesting cemetery located just up the road from the airport.
Another shot with some interesting clouds.
There are many graves dating back to 17th and 18th century.
Jacqui and Diane checking out some reflections in Castlebay.
Bill finds the reflection too, this is the church that overlooks the harbour in Castlebay.
Ken capturing a few shots of Kisimul Castle.
The beach at sunset near our hotel in Barra last night.
Another shot of the beautiful sunset last night ... this is the light at 10:00 p.m.
Don Jones took this great shot ... I can almost hear what the sheep is saying ... “Looks like fish for dinner ... this is my kind of family!!” I know I know a baaaad joke.
The beautiful reflections as we waited for the ferry to depart this morning.
Our ferry with Kisimul Castle in the background.
More reflections on the bay.
The parking area on the ferry.
Creative ship workers ... this guy was on one of the ferry decks today.
More reflections with part of Castlebay in the background.
More of Castlebay.
A view off the back of the ferry as we sailed out of Barra Island today.
Duart Castle on Mull as we sailed passed.
Joan and Don relaxing on the deck.
David, Ruth and Jacqui enjoying the beautiful sunlight on the deck today.
Diane can been seen in the bottom right corner capturing a few images as we arrived in Oban.
Harry MacPherson sent me this little pome today and said if I have a shot of the ferry to share it. Thanks Harry!! "The Earth belongs unto The Lord and all that it contains except the Outer Hebrides and they belong to Caledonian MacBrayne".
Lighthouse near Oban.
A view of our hotel as we arrived into the harbour. Our hotel is the third building from the left. We have a great view of the harbour from the sun room.
A creative shot of the water as we sailed by Deb.
A couple more lighthouses as we sailed into Oban.
Here’s the other.
We’ve been finishing each night with something yellow, so here are a couple of shots for today’s entry. This was at the ferry port before our departure this morning.
This yellow is a creative piece from Deb. You never know what you will find in the countryside!!!
That’s a wrap for tonights images. Good night from Oban, Scotland.
