Old Masset, Totem Poles and Fishing Derby
I’m going to start off again tonight commenting on the weather ... another beautiful day here on the Haida Gwaii Islands. Another 26C day today and it was beautiful, not to mention how nice to get around for photography.
Today we drove up to Old Masset to do some landscape photography and to photograph some of the totem poles. Quite a few homes in this old Haida village have interesting totem poles. Each pole is significant and has it’s own meaning. We then returned to Queen Charlotte City had dinner and then this evening attended the weigh in at the annual fishing derby. Great fun and some huge fish. The winner was a 35 pound salmon.
Tomorrow we will be photographing at balance rock, then heading out mid day for a zodiac tour of the other islands and some of the inlets. Below are a selection of images from today’s activities. Good night from under the full moon on Haida Gwaii.
Lilly pads in Mayer lake this morning on the way to Old Masset.
White and puffy.
Nancy capturing a few images on the lily pond.
A wide view of Mayer lake, we saw a few loons in the distance.
Jerry and Ryan working on a few shots.
Another eagle watching closely this morning near Masset.
This juvenile eagle was just taking off, check out his talons.
7 bald eagles just watching and waiting for a fisherman to clean his fish.
I hang my hat for a quick pic and look who wants to paint my finger nails black, Again!

A whale totem carving.
One of the many beautiful totems in Old Masset.
Each totem pole tells a story.
Speaking of stories... Look who’s the low man on the totem pole!
Tonight at the fishing derby these guys came in to weight in ... sorry disqualified.
Weighing in, the winner came in at 35 pounds.
Another nice size fish.
Then comes the cleaning.

Hats off to another great day on the islands. That is it for this evening folks.
Good night from all the Photo Tour Trekkers on Haida Gwaii.
