Trek up Mount Etna, wine tasting and Toarmina.
This morning we drove to Mount Etna, the highest and largest active volcano in Europe. The peak has changed in size over the years, but is currently in the neighbourhood of 3.300 metres. Etna has been active in modern times in 1928, the little village of Mascali was buried under its lava, and eruptions in 2001 and 2002 rekindled Sicilian fears: the air was thick and dirty over eastern Sicily as Mount Etna once again spewed out columns of ash that blackened skies as far away as Tripoli, and off the coast of North Africa. We had lunch in a typical country house at the base of Mount Etna, were we were greeted with starters and wine tasting, then lunch. This evening we had opportunity to experience the night life of Taormina. More from this beautiful city tomorrow. To see todays images please click on the gallery link below.
