Early this morning we flew from Winnipeg to Churchill. Arriving just after 9 a.m. we had a full day of exploring in and around Churchill. We visited the Polar Bear holding facility or otherwise known as the Polar Bear Jail. This is where bears are held that have misbehaved or continuously get too close to the town of Churchill. They are kept in the dark and only given water or ice (don’t want them to be too comfortable) … then as soon as the bay freezes over they are released on the ice. Safer for the bears and the residences and visitors.
We also explored some of the coastal roads and other famous Churchill landmarks. After lunch the group took a helicopter ride over the region with great sightings of bears. 8 for one group and 10 for the second group. Images to follow from the helicopter tomorrow night. After dinner one of the local photographers Alex presented a slide show of his images and experiences of the different seasons in Churchill. All in all a great first day.
Tomorrow we are up early and out on the Tundra Vehicles for our first of three days of exploration and photographing the polar bears on the tundra. Check out some of our images from today by clicking on the gallery link below. Enjoy and goodnight from Churchill.
